GUEST LECTURERS
Randi J. Hagerman, M.D. is a Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrician and the Medical Director of the M.I.N.D. Institute at the University of California at Davis. She is internationally recognized as both a clinician and researcher in the fragile X field. Dr. Hagerman co&#45;founded the National Fragile X Foundation and developed a world&#45;renowned fragile X research and treatment center. Dr. Hagerman and her team discovered the fragile X&#45;associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS) which is a neurological disorder that affects older carriers of fragile X. Dr. Hagerman&amp;rsquo;s research involves genotype&#45;phenotype correlations in fragile X and the association of fragile X and autism. Her recent work has focused on targeted treatments for FXS, FXTAS and Autism. She has worked with her husband Paul to establish the Neurotherapeutics Research Institute at UC Davis, dedicated to finding treatments for neurodevelopmental and neurogenerative disorders. Dr. Hagerman has worked internationally to establish fragile X clinical programs and research programs throughout the world.
Kathryn A. McFadden, M.D., the parent of an autistic teenaged daughter, is a developmental neuropathologist and junior faculty member in the Division of Neuropathology, University of Pittsburgh. Her primary research interest is examining the neurobiological substrate(s) underlying impaired neuronal connectivity in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) as well as determining which brain developmental processes give rise to these alterations. Dr. McFadden&amp;rsquo;s research is a developmental neurobiological study of temporal and regional gene expression in postmortem brain tissue to further inform the search for genes in ASD. The selection of these axonal pathfinding genes is based on a genome wide association study in ASD families conducted by the Autism Genome Project. Dr. McFadden is also a funded Autism Tissue Project researcher, examining cortical layering abnormalities in autism using layer&#45;specific antibodies. Dr. McFadden&amp;rsquo;s team is also researching a velocardialfacial syndrome (VCFS) model of autism using both patient brain tissue and a mouse model. After Fragile X, VCFS is the chromosomal condition most associated with an autistic phenotype.
Brian A. Iwata, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Florida and director of the Florida Center on Self&#45;Injury and the Prader&#45;Willi Syndrome Program. His primary area of interest is the experimental analysis of disorders of learning and behavior, the core methodology for procedures known as functional behavioral assessment. Dr. Iwata is the former chief editor of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and former president of the Association for Behavior Analysis, Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis, Society for the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, Division of Developmental Disabilities of the American Psychological Association, and Florida Association for Behavior Analysis.

      <title>Debunking vaccine link to autism</title>
      <link>http://www.edenautismservices.org/index.php/news-events/entry/debunking-vaccine-link-to-autism/</link>
<description>From: Anne Holmes of Eden Autism ServicesThe retraction of the article in the British medical journal, The Lancet, linking vaccines to autism is an almost unprecedented occurrence and a major step forward for the autism community. This retraction, and the discrediting of the lead author, validates what we at Eden Autism Services have long believed:vaccines do not cause autism. This announcement will hopefully provide confidence to parents when it comes to vaccinations and bring an end to the trend of parents not vaccinating their children, which risks the potential of resurrecting many serious diseases. While some may continue research on this subject, the field can now focus their attention to other areas in order to identify the cause/causes of autism. While research into finding the cause of autism is important, we must keep in mind the need for appropriate services for those who have already been diagnosed with this disorder.</description>
